Transition Object

Your child struggles moving between environments

Steps

  1. Let your child choose a small comfort object
  2. This object travels WITH them during transitions
  3. It provides consistency when the environment changes
  4. Over time, they may naturally stop needing it

What you need

A small, portable comfort item (keychain, small toy, worry stone)

Why it works

For children with Autism and Sensory Processing differences, transitions between environments mean adjusting to a whole new set of sensory inputs. A familiar object provides continuity — something that stays the same when everything else is changing. This reduces the cognitive and sensory load of the transition.

Age guidance

Most effective for ages 3-8. Older children may prefer a less visible item like a small keyring or worry stone in their pocket.

Real-world example

One child chose a small wooden elephant that fitted in their palm. It went to school, to grandma's house, to the doctor. The parent noticed that during stressful transitions, the child would instinctively reach into their pocket and hold it. Within a month, transitions that used to trigger anxiety were manageable.
