Adulting Admin Without Dread
For when appointments, forms, taxes, renewals, and 'official' tasks pile up until something becomes urgent or late
Steps
- Keep one 'admin list' (one place, not five). Capture every life admin item as soon as it lands, even half-formed
- Schedule a weekly 'Admin Hour' on the same day and time, ideally with body-doubling (a friend, café, or co-working call)
- Front-load the smallest action: 'find the email', 'open the form', 'find the phone number'. Starting is the whole battle
- Batch by type within the hour: all phone calls together, all forms together. Switching context is the most expensive cost
- If a task triggers freeze, write it down with the one next physical step and move on. Capture beats completion
What you need
One admin list (notes app, paper, Notion), a recurring weekly hour, a body double if possible
Why it works
Life admin combines task initiation, working memory, time blindness, and decision fatigue, the exact stack ADHD and autistic brains struggle with. A predictable time, place, and method removes most of the friction.
Real-world example
An ADHD adult had unopened post for months and missed two MOT-style renewals. A Sunday 5-6pm Admin Hour with a friend on video call cleared a year of backlog in 6 weeks.
Troubleshooting
- If 60 minutes feels too long, start with 20. Consistency beats duration
- Pair Admin Hour with something genuinely nice: favourite coffee, candle, playlist. Reward the act of starting
- If a task has been on your list for a month, ask: does this actually matter, or can it die quietly?
